Isbister and Company Limited, 1894.
First edition.
8vo.
224pp, [16]. With half-title, engraved frontispiece, 16 further engraved plates, numerous in-text illustrations, and a terminal catalogue of publisher's advertisements. Original publisher's red cloth, decorated in gilt and blind. Lightly rubbed and marked, with wear to extremities, spine dulled. Occasional light scattered spotting.
The sole edition, copiously illustrated, of an educational and literary study of British birds by English naturalist and journalist Philip Stewart Robinson (1847-1902). Robinson, born in Chunar, returned to India in adulthood, later authoring several humorous volumes on Indian wildlife, alongside numerous essays and short stories set in largely-fictionalised versions of India and Africa. This volume, in original cloth, combines excerpts of poetry with Robinson's lighthearted scientific observations, anecdotes, and Charles Whymper's (1853-1941) intricate engravings.
