A new hieroglyphic bible...

12mo.
67pp, [1]. Wrappers included in pagination. With an engraved frontispiece and numerous engraved illustrations in the text. Original publisher's pictorial yellow wrappers. Rubbed and marked, loss to spine. Internally clean and crisp.
A mid-nineteenth-century edition, in original unsophisticated state, of Derby-based printer and publisher Thomas Richardson's emblematical bible designed to familiarise young readers with the holy scripture. This unorthodox production replaces key words and phrases with well-executed engravings with the aim of simplifying reading of the (much abridged) gospels; though deciphering the intention of the symbols does on occasion present its own challenge - thankfully complete sentences with the original terms reinstated are provided at the foot of each page.
