In Archiv für Naturgeschichte (Berlin, 1836), zoologist Arend Wiegmann (1802-1841) attributes the three essays to pioneering geographer Carl Ritter (1779-1859), stating that they were extracted from the fourth volume of his monumental geographical magnum opus Erdkunde im Verhältnis zur Natur und zur Geschichte des Menschen (1817-52).
